Applied Human Machine Intelligence in East Africa ( AHUMAIN)

Data Science and AI Training through AHUMAIN Project

Ardhi University (ARU) successfully hosted a 10-day Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) training program from September 4th to 13th, under the Applied Human Machine Intelligence (AHUMAIN) project, which is part of the Erasmus+ initiative. This event attracted 50 participants, including key project coordinators from the European Union—specifically AP University of Applied Sciences and Arts and its partner Howest University in Belgium—as well as other notable partners from East Africa such as Makerere University and Muni University from Uganda. Additionally, the Karume Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), the East Africa Coordinator from Innovent Company, Uganda, and various governmental and private institutions from Tanzania were in attendance; Including ( CRDB bank, Azania Bank, Tanzania  Meteorological Agency (TMA),  Information and Communication Technologies Commission (ICTC)   and Zanzibar, Planning Commission to mention a few.

The training aimed to equip participants with essential AI and Data Science skills, promoting innovation across sectors such as healthcare, education, and manufacturing.

This training is part of ARU’s broader mission to lead the AI revolution, including the introduction of a Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in the upcoming 2025/2026 academic year, developed under the AHUMAIN project. Through international collaborations, ARU is actively advancing Data Science and AI education and will continue offering training and capacity-building programs in these critical fields.

Training Sessions

The Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) training was officially inaugurated by Prof. John Lupala, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Ardhi University (ARU). Prof. Lupala warmly welcomed the European and East African partners, as well as other institutions, to ARU, emphasizing the importance of adding value and building competencies for both the participants and their organizations. He also stressed the need to strengthen the existing partnerships, stating, “This collaboration lays the groundwork for future partnerships, particularly in research and training, and contributes to one of ARU’s core values: Internationalization.”

Six trainers from AP University, Howest University, and Makerere University led the sessions, focusing on enhancing the participants' skills in Data Science and AI. The sessions were highly interactive and practical, allowing participants to fully engage with and benefit from this cutting-edge knowledge. Upon completion, all participants were awarded certificates for their attendance.

  
     
  

 

Visit by the Belgian Ambassador -Data Science and Artifiial Intelligence Training

Durig the 10 days training of Data scoence ans artificial Intelligence Training at Ardhi Univesity,  His Excellency Ambassador Peter Huyghebaert of Belgium visited Ardhi University as part of the AHUMAIN Training program. He was warmly received by Prof. Evaristo Liwa, Vice Chancellor of ARU. During his visit, the Ambassador and the Vice Chancellor shared lunch with the participants and reflected on the strong ties between Tanzania and Belgium. In his remarks, Ambassador Huyghebaert emphasized the importance of University Collaboration and highlighted several ongoing and upcoming projects resulting from the friendship between the two nations.

 

 

 
      
 

 

Profiles of the Training Local Coordination Team

 

Dr. Godfrey Luwemba, a key local coordinator of the AHUMAIN Project, is a researcher and lecturer in the Department of Computer Systems and Mathematics at ARU. With a PhD in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam, Dr. Luwemba also serves as a registered professional engineer with the Engineers Registration Board of Tanzania. His role in the AHUMAIN Project involves overseeing the training program and aligning it with ARU’s vision of leveraging ICT for smart, sustainable urban development. His expertise in telecommunications, IoT, digital innovation, and AI has been central to promoting ICT advancements in Tanzania through collaboration between academia, industry, and government.

 

 

 

Dr. Eunice Likotiko, also a co-lead in the AHUMAIN Project, is a researcher and lecturer at ARU, holding a Doctor of Engineering in Information Science from Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) in Japan. As the Head of the Technology Transfer and Commercialization Department, Dr. Likotiko’s research focuses on using emerging technologies to address challenges in health, climate change, and environmental conservation. Her leadership in the AHUMAIN Project is instrumental in equipping participants with AI and Data Science skills, empowering them to make a positive impact within their communities and beyond.

This initiative aligns with ARU's commitment to becoming a technology-driven, globally connected institution. Through projects like AHUMAIN, ARU is fostering future research opportunities and sustainable growth in AI education, ensuring that Tanzania remains at the forefront of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
