History and Background

The Institute of Human Settlements Studies (IHSS) of Ardhi University (ARU) was originally founded in 1979 as a Centre for Housing Studies (CHS), a joint Programme between the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and The Netherlands. CHS was renamed Centre for Human Settlements Studies (CHSS) in 1992 which lasted up to the end of June 1996 when it was upgraded to an Institute for Housing Studies and Building Research (IHSBR). Two years later the Institute was renamed Institute of Human Settlements Studies (IHSS). IHSS is a multidisciplinary Research Institution involved largely in research, teaching, and provision of advisory services and dissemination of information in the field of human settlements.

IHSS has grown from a small unit managed by four academic staff members in 1979 to a full-fledged Institute of Ardhi University with 18 staff members. At present the Institute has thirteen academic staff and five administrative staff. The academic staff members represent a wide range of expertise in urban and regional planning, infrastructure planning and management, environmental science, water resources, architecture, civil and environmental engineering, valuation, geographical information systems and remote sensing, and gender issues. Many academic staff members hold PhD and MSc and several are on PhD studies.
